There are men and classes of menthat stand above the common herd: the soldier, the sailor and theshepherd not unfrequently; the artist rarely; rarely still, theclergyman; the physician almost as a rule.  He is the flower(such as it is) of our civilisation; and when that stage of manis done with, and only remembered to be marvelled at in history,he will be thought to have shared as little as any in the defectsof the period, and most notably exhibited the virtues of therace.  Generosity he has, such as is possible to those whopractise an art, never to those who drive a trade; discretion,tested by a hundred secrets; tact, tried in a thousandembarrassments; and what are more important, Heracleancheerfulness and courage.  So it is that he brings air andcheer into the sickroom, and often enough, though not so often ashe wishes, brings healing.

The human conscience has fled oflate the troublesome domain of conduct for what I should havesupposed to be the less congenial field of art: there she may nowbe said to rage, and with special severity in all that touchesdialect; so that in every novel the letters of the alphabet aretortured, and the reader wearied, to commemorate shades ofmis-pronunciation.  Now spelling is an art of greatdifficulty in my eyes, and I am inclined to lean upon theprinter, even in common practice, rather than to venture abroadupon new quests.  And the Scots tongue has an orthography ofits own, lacking neither “authority norauthor.”  Yet the temptation is great to lend a littleguidance to the bewildered Englishman.  Some simple phoneticartifice might defend your verses from barbarous mishandling, andyet not injure any vested interest.  So it seems at first;but there are p.xrocks ahead.  Thus, if I wish the diphthongouto have its proper value, I may write oorinstead of our; many have done so and lived, and thepillars of the universe remained unshaken.  But if I did so,and came presently to doun, which is the classical Scotsspelling of the English down, I should begin to feeluneasy; and if I went on a little farther, and came to aclassical Scots word, like stouror dourorclour, I should know precisely where I was—that isto say, that I was out of sight of land on those high seas ofspelling reform in which so many strong swimmers have toiledvainly.  To some the situation is exhilarating; as for me, Igive one bubbling cry and sink.  The compromise at which Ihave arrived is indefensible, and I have no thought of trying todefend it.  As I have stuck for the most part to the properspelling, I append a table of some common vowel sounds which noone need consult; and just to prove that I belong to my age andhave in me the stuff of a reformer, I have used modificationmarks throughout.  Thus I can tell myself, not withoutpride, that I have added a fresh stumbling-block for Englishreaders, and p.xito a page of print in my native tongue, have lent a newuncouthness.  Sed non nobis.

I note again, that among our new dialecticians, the localhabitat of every dialect is given to the square mile.  Icould not emulate this nicety if I desired; for I simply wrote myScots as well as I was able, not caring if it hailed fromLauderdale or Angus, from the Mearns or Galloway; if I had everheard a good word, I used it without shame; and when Scots waslacking, or the rhyme jibbed, I was glad (like my betters) tofall back on English.  For all that, I own to a friendlyfeeling for the tongue of Fergusson and of Sir Walter, bothEdinburgh men; and I confess that Burns has always sounded in myear like something partly foreign.  And indeed I am from theLothians myself; it is there I heard the language spoken about mychildhood; and it is in the drawling Lothian voice that I repeatit to myself.  Let the precisians call my speech that of theLothians.  And if it be not pure, alas! what mattersit?  The day draws near when this illustrious and malleabletongue shall be quite forgotten; and Burn’s Ayrshire, andDr. Macdonald’s Aberdeen-awa’, p. xiiandScott’s brave, metropolitan utterance will be all equallythe ghosts of speech.  Till then I would love to have myhour as a native Maker, and be read by my own countryfolk in ourown dying language: an ambition surely rather of the heart thanof the head, so restricted as it is in prospect of endurance, soparochial in bounds of space.

p.97Note.—It may be guessed by some that I hada certain parish in my eye, and this makes it proper I should adda word of disclamation.  In my time there have been twoministers in that parish.  Of the first I have a specialreason to speak well, even had there been any to think ill. The second I have often met in private and long (in the duephrase) “sat under” in his church, and neither herenor there have I heard an unkind or ugly word upon hislips.  The preacher of the text had thus no original in thatparticular parish; but when I was a boy, he might have beenobserved in many others; he was then (like the schoolmaster)abroad; and by recent advices, it would seem he has not yetentirely disappeared.
